Night Vision Devices - A Great Technology to See Through The Dark

Night vision technology has been there for quite a while. We humans possess poor night-vision as compared to several animal species. However today with proper night vision equipment we can notice things or persons standing far away even on a moonless cloudy night. In the 21st century today we have advanced a lot and come a long way in developing night vision technology since its discovery. And PVS14 night vision devices are proof of it! Sounds interesting right? Want to know more about night vision technology? Then scroll down:

How  Night Vision Technology Works?

Usually a night vision technology works in two different ways i.e. Image Intensification and Thermal Imaging.

  • Image intensification:

Image intensification is a method that involves surrounding light amplification. It detects the low levels of light and then amplifies it as required. When photons, the tiny particles that make up the light enter an image enhancer, they get hit to a layer called a photo cathode first which is responsible for releasing electrons. These electrons then hit a second layer called a micro channel plate where the electrons get multiplied before hitting the phosphor screen which converts these electrons back into light. As the electrons have been multiplied, there number has increased tremendously which is why a brighter image is obtained at the end. One drawback of this model is that it fails where there is not enough light for thermal enhancers to see at all!

  • Thermal Imaging:

Thermal imaging is a technique that requires capturing of the upper portion of the infrared light spectrum that has been emitted as heat energy by objects instead of being simply reflected as light. The temperature gets detected by capturing the different levels of IR radiation. Although you cannot see the light in the dark, you can feel it as heat, provided the intensity is high enough! However, this approach of thermal imaging comes with numerous disadvantages such as are too expensive, image formed is of not that great quality and you cannot see the target objects if any transparent obstacles are there in the field of view.
